Erich Groner, the first writer to attempt to document a national fleet in its entirety over a long period of time, died in 1965 but his work has been ably carried on by the present authors.
The first edition of Erich Groner's work was published in 1936 under the title of Die deutschen Kriegsschiffe 1815- 1945 (German Warships 1815- 1945). He was the first writer to attempt to document a national fleet in its entirety over a long period of time, presenting the technical and historical information in the form of tables, drawings to a standard scale, and details of the fates of individual ships. His book was founded on years of painstaking study of the carefully maintained stocks of documents and plans belonging to the Imperial and Reich navies.
